Salt Lake City is the largest city in the state of Utah and a common destination for travellers to the American west. The growth of the area has necessitated a revamping of the airport, which will include additional gates and more international flights. And one tenant whose presence will satisfy craft beer fans everywhere is Salt Lake Brewing Co. and its two brands, Squatters Craft Beers and Wasatch Brewery.
Salt Lake City’s new airport will offer a world class travel experience and the plans call for both a Squatters and Wasatch pub. Anyone who has traveled to Salt Lake City in the past is likely already aware of the Squatters Airport Pub, a warm and friendly fixture at the Salt Lake City Airport for almost two decades. Salt Lake Brewing Company Chief Operating Officer Doug Hofeling is thrilled to know that his business will continue to serve happy travelers who enjoy discovering airport food and drink that are indicative of the local culture.
“We could not imagine a Salt Lake City Airport without a Squatters, especially as we enter our 30th year of continuous operation in 2019. We poured all our effort into the bidding process, and left it all on the field,” said Hofeling. “We are beyond grateful to have been selected and cannot wait to be a part of this enormous step forward for the state of Utah.”
Wasatch Brewery, one of the oldest craft breweries in the United States, will make its appearance at the new Salt Lake City Airport along with Squatters. For Wasatch, it will be the first time the brewery has occupied its own space at Salt Lake City airport and it’s a fitting tribute for a brewery that dates all the way back to 1986, when it opened for business for the first time in the tourist driven town of Park City. Salt Lake City Brewing’s Marketing Manager Lauren Boyack is proud that Wasatch will have its own presence when the new facility opens its doors.
“Wasatch defined the modern brew pub concept and we’re thrilled that our brewery, which is so synonymous with the Utah way of life, will now have a home at the Salt Lake City Airport,” said Boyack.
The all new Salt Lake City International Airport is set to open in 2020 with an expected construction cost of $3.6 billion, funded entirely through bonds, cash, and ticket/car rental fees. I’m surprised SLC has a vibrant beer audience. Last time I went which was years ago, alcohol was pretty strict. And at one point required a special license in order to purchase and consumer alcohol at bars.
Yes, the rules are stricter in Utah than in other states. But Utah folks are also pro- capitalism and they know that a good number of people visit from other states, so it makes sense to keep the tourists happy. And having brewpubs at the airport is one way to do this.
Very interesting article, I shared it with my fiancé! He has been trying to convince me to go to Utah for a few and maybe now I’ll consider it 🙂
