California- based Stone Brewing is bringing back a fan favorite beer, but with a few changes. The beer is Stone Imperial Notorious P.O.G., a ramped-up version of Stone Notorious P.O.G, a beer first brewed back in 2016.
How it All Began
Stone Notorious P.O.G. has an unusual name. It dates back to 2016 when actor and comedian Jonah Ray joined Stone brewer Kris Ketcham with the goal of creating a collaboration brew at Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens, Liberty Station. Jonah Ray, a native Hawaiian, fondly remembers a childhood that included drinking POG Juice. This is a drink made with passionfruit, orange, and guava, highly popular on the islands. He wanted a beer that was similar and insisted that the new collaboration beer would have the “P,” the “O” and the “G” in its name.
The new beer, Stone Notorious P.O.G. was originally brewed as a Berliner Weisse, with flavors of tart orange citrus and tropical fruit. It’s got a nose of tropical fruits, citrus and honey. The flavors emphasize Passion fruit, guava, and orange, which makes it much like the POG juice that made Hawaii famous.
The Fans Have Spoken
This new version, Stone Imperial Notorious P.O.G., was the result of a vote by Stone Brewing fans. Stone beer lovers were asked to cast a vote for a nationwide limited release beer and they selected this imperial version of Notorious P.O.G. Stone Brewing Senior Manager of Brewing & Innovation Kris Ketcham says this new version does boast higher abv, but the incredible taste actually masks its potency.
“We’ve been experimenting with taking up the ABV on some of our favorite beers,” explained Ketcham. “Stone Notorious P.O.G. stood out because not only does the imperial version taste amazing, you can’t even tell the ABV is higher. We knew our fans would welcome this upgrade to one of their favorites.”
Get it While You Can
Stone Imperial Notorious P.O.G. contains an alcohol level of 8 percent by volume and a bitterness rating of 25 IBU. I’ve never actually even tasted anything with alcohol in it. I did enjoy the story of the beer and how it came to be.
I have a thing for packaging and this is super cool. I’m going to check if I can order online in my state!
The fruity components of this sounds so good! I am a fan of passionfruit, orange, and guava, and I think they would make a wonderful combination.
Love the story how it all began. WE are super excited for this new version.
Great backstory on how Stone Brewing created Imperial Notorious P.O.G. I’ll (hopefully) try it before it’s gone!
I really enjoyed reading about the release of Stone Imperial Notorious P.O.G. It’s fascinating to learn about the origins of the beer and how it was influenced by POG juice. The fans’ involvement in choosing the imperial version is a great way to engage the community. I appreciate the details about the flavors, ABV, and packaging options. Cheers to Stone Brewing for another exciting release!
I never tried this product, but I love the package. And “damn tropical taste” made me curious. Maybe we will find this beer for our family barbeque parties in August.
It’s so cool to know how it came to be. I would definitely try it as well if it’s available in my country!
The packaging is super cool, and I love it. I will definitely give this a try!
Hhhhmmm…I am knowing of Stone Brewing for my first time. I must say their canisters look so cool! I am definitely sharing this blog post with my beer-loving friends.
I love the story behind the name Stone Notorious P.O.G.! It’s interesting to learn that the name comes from a Hawaiian juice that the creator enjoyed as a child. The fact that the beer is similar in flavour to the P.O.G. juice is cool. It’s also great that the fans had a say in creating the Imperial Notorious P.O.G. version and that it has been so well-received. I want to try it before it’s gone!
I love the bit of history of this beer. The more I read the name though, the more it sounds like a rapper’s name. Anyway, it’s quite interesting to know that it’s a fan favorite so it must taste really good.
