Collaboration beers are often fun, and often quite unique. When a partnership forms between a brewery and other beverage or food establishment, the results can be quite memorable. That is certainly the case with Spicy Pickle Sour Beer, a collab effort between SuckerPunch Gourmet, makers of pickles done differently, and award-winning DESTIHL Brewery.
Beer Essentials
Brewed in the style of a Gose ale, Suckerpunch Spicy Pickle Sour Beer contains 5.2 percent alcohol by volume and a low bitterness rating of 20 IBU. To enjoy the taste experience best, it is recommended that you serve the beer in a tulip, snifter, or large wine glass.
Tasting Notes
Poured into a glass, Suckerpunch Spicy Pickle Sour Beer loses its head of foam quickly. As my image confirms, there is no foam to speak of. I took my picture within about 15 seconds of pouring and even with an aggressive pour, there was little no foam remaining in that short span of time.
Suckerpunch Spicy Pickle Sour Beer features a tart flavor that is distinctly spicy, with flavors of pickle, garlic, salt, and citrus. The pickle brine flavor and spiciness are what you will remember best. The spiciness lingers and depending on your personal tolerance for heat, you may want to ease up on your speed of consumption. And it isn’t as overly sour as I worried it might be. It’s spicy more than anything.
I sipped mine slowly, going back to it again and again, until the glass was emptied. I spent a good thirty minutes or so, imbibing at a slow, steady, and tasteful pace. I’m glad I followed Destihl’s advice and served this beer in a snifter style glass. The nose on the beer is much more pronounced this way and thus the tasting experience is more enjoyable. I would not recommend serving in a pint shaker glass. The taste experience will be lessened if you use the wrong type of glassware.
For Pickle Connoisseurs
Suckerpunch Spicy Pickle Sour Beer is the second collaboration between these two establishments. It’s a beer with attitude, to say the least. Don’t let its modest 5.2 percent alcohol by volume fool you. The alcohol level might be lower than that of most craft beers, but the taste is full and distinct.
This beer was made for the pickle lovers among us. I have had other pickle beers, and even a pickle seltzer. Most have been respectable, but I like Suckerpunch Spicy Pickle Sour Beer better. I wouldn’t call myself a pickle connoisseur, but I do like pickles and this one is markedly better than most other pickle beers. I admit, though, that the spiciness can get to you if you’re not prepared. There are times when my taste buds are NOT wanting excessive spice and when this mood occurs, I would probably not appreciate this beer the way I should.
Suckerpunch Spicy Pickle Sour Beer is available starting May 31, 2023 as a year- round offering. It’s a spicy, pickle- enhanced delight and makes a great choice for pickle fanatics everywhere. Look for it where other Destihl beers are sold.

It’s great that Destihl recommends serving this beer in a snifter glass. I think this is a great way to enjoy the full flavor of the beer. The nose is much more pronounced in a snifter, and the beer feels more special when served in this type of glassware.
I enjoy trying new beers, but pickle beer! This is a must-try for me. I do hope I am able to find it.
Ooohhhh….alright then! It’s good to know of this pickle beer now. I am following it up from here on out.
Wow, this spicy pickle beer looks really interesting. I’d love to try it! We have a lot of local breweries in my area, and I don’t think I’ve come across pickle beer yet. Sour beers are a big thing right now (but more on the sweet side), which are unique and pretty good.
Pickle sour is not something that sounds like my type of beer but I have to say I am very intrigued after reading your blog post, it sounds very tempting to try something a bit different. You make it sound really delicious.
The Spicy Pickle Sour Beer may not be to everyone’s taste. While I personally like spicy flavors, this is a bit different. Guess I will give it a try.
This beer collaboration is ao unique and I think it’ll be popular to people. I would definitely want a pickle beer.
Although I don’t drink a lot of beers but from time to time would love to try one. This look interesting and maybe I can try it.
It looks like a great beer to try! I didn’t know this beer but I’d love to give it a sip!
I agree that the Suckerpunch Spicy Pickle Sour Beer foam disappears quickly, but the flavor makes up for it. The combination of tartness, spiciness, and pickle brine flavour is memorable, and serving it in a snifter glass enhances the experience. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
The pickle beer 🍺 looks like an interesting flavor profile. Thanks for exposing us to awsome breweries and unique tasting beers 🍻.
