Giving Tuesday is an important day for people everywhere and its roots can be traced to 2012 when the concept was first created. It has grown in popularity exponentially since that time and today, Giving Tuesday has morphed into a global movement that encourages everyone to give time or money to an important cause or otherwise take some sort of action to make the world a better place.
Here at Great Beer Now, charity and giving are part of our regular vocabulary. Great Beer Now is one of the few beer blogs that considers charity just as important as other beer- worthy topics and it’s also one of the few beer blogs that has a separate posting category for charity. Giving Tuesday is a day on which Great Beer Now selects an important charity, makes a donation, and encourages others to do the same. This year, the selected charity is American Rivers, a non- profit organization dedicated to the conservation of America’s waterways.
Clean Water Matters
I think it goes without saying but certainly bears repeating: Clean water is vitally important to the health of every person and every living thing on the planet! Water is, of course, an ingredient used in the manufacture of practically every food and beverage product and American Rivers is dedicated to protecting this critical resource through its many programs. The organization works toward its important goal by cleaning up rivers and waterways, restoring the natural flow of rivers, encouraging efficiency and cutting water waste, etc.

Drinking and Beyond
American Rivers is, first and foremost, an organization committed to protecting America’s extensive river system and ensuring that clean drinking water is readily available for all. In addition to the emphasis on clean drinking water, American Rivers promotes rivers as a recreational resource. The organization works to preserve wild and scenic rivers and encourages citizens to visit local rivers for fishing, boating, etc., being ever mindful of the important role each of us plays in keeping the rivers clean and enjoyable.
Activism Starts with You
The role American Rivers plays is crucial to the protection of waterways across the land and like any non- profit organization, positive change and results require volunteers and financial contributions whenever possible. American Rivers sponsors a National River Cleanup each year and since this program was initiated in 1991, volunteers have cleaned up more than 25 million (!) pounds of litter. This is just one example of the many volunteer efforts that American Rivers sponsors each year. The organization encourages members/supporters to organize their own river cleanup efforts and even offers assistance in this important endeavor.
Rivers connect us, as American Rivers likes to say, and nothing could be truer. With the negative impact of litter, pollution, climate change, and the like, our fresh water supply is under constant threat. American Rivers is an organization leading the fight for clean waterways and it’s an organization that Great Beer Now plans to support each year, starting today with a Giving Tuesday donation. Logon to the American Rivers web site yourself, complete the sign up for more information, and look for ways to get involved and make a difference. America’s water supply depends on proper management and American Rivers is committed to protecting this vital resource for well- being of all.
Living in Pittsburgh I understand how important rivers are to our well being. I will definitely check out this organization. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for sharing this information. I participated in one of the first big river cleanups in highschool. I’d forgotten about it and this just reminded me. It was a fun day made better by knowing we were doing important work. Definitely going to check out the site for more info.
Those of us who live in areas that are blessed when it comes to the availability of clean water (I’m in Canada) often forget that clean water is a serious concern in many areas of the world, and it isn’t endless (even here)! Such an important topic that really does need more attention! Thank you for sharing and helping to highlight the conversation!
