In the minds of most craft beer drinkers, nothing beats the taste of beer tapped straight from the keg. With its lovely topper of foam, tightly packed, bubbly body, and smooth taste, draft beer is an experience worth waiting for and it’s no wonder that so many craft beer fans forgo the purchase of a six pack of bottles or cans and instead visit their favorite tavern when the need for great beer is too intense to ignore and only the best will do.

Today, there is no reason to visit your local bar for the taste of draft beer because a new device helps convert any bottle, can or small growler of beer into a draft beer experience. The device is called Fizzics Draft Beer System, a portable means to better beer at home.
How Does Fizzics Work?
First, let’s discuss the basics. Fizzics is a lightweight device consisting of only a few parts: The canister, where you place your beer; the top section, where the Fizzics mechanism is housed; the base, which serves as a drip tray and a place to set your glass; and the flexible plastic tube that delivers the beer to your mug To use Fizzics, you load it first with 4 AA batteries, then you insert a can, bottle, or small growler into the canister. The plastic tube is then inserted into the beer and the top section is snapped shut. Then, with a glass held underneath the dispenser, you pull the handle forward to dispense the beer into your glass. Once the glass is almost full, you push the handle backward, to create the perfect head of foam.
Fizzics is unique in that it utilizes sound wave, fluid/gas technology to transform beer into something closely resembling a beer served straight from a keg. The technology creates smaller, more tightly packed bubbles, leading to a creamier mouthfeel and a head of foam that is longer lasting. The beer is ultimately smoother than before, easier drinking, and more pleasing to the palate.

Seeing is Believing
The best way to see the difference Fizzics makes is to compare, side by side, an identical beer tapped using Fizzics to one poured by hand from a bottle or can. For my first experiment, I chose 8th Wonder Brewing Hopston IPA, a nicely balanced India Pale Ale that features a good dose of malt and hop with no single, dominant taste. Look at the picture above and you can clearly see the difference that Fizzics makes. The glass on the left is the one tapped from the Fizzics system while the one on the right is the one poured from a can. The Fizzics beer has smaller, more tightly packed bubbles and a heartier head of foam. This smooths out the edginess of many beers and does make the brew more enjoyable overall.
After drinking several sips from each beer, I noticed that the Fizzics beer still maintained its head of foam and left lacing on my glass as it subsided. The picture below illustrates this well. At the point when I snapped this picture, each of the two glasses of beer had been poured and allowed to settle for an equal amount of time. The Fizzics beer on the left easily held up, maintaining its foam and delivering a nice, semi- creamy texture/mouthfeel all the way to the final sip.

Draft Beer at Home or Anywhere
Fizzics is a cool idea and concept that could easily catch on with the beer loving public. I like the way it transforms my beer into a more pleasant experience and I have liked each beer I have tapped using this system. My IPA above was tasty, but I think the best Fizzics – delivered beer of all was a bottle of Strawberry Ale. The creamy mouthfeel created by Fizzics was exceptionally compatible with this style of beer.
Looking at the mechanics of Fizzics, I can easily say that the best quality is that there is NO replacement part- no cartridge to replace periodically, like I first feared. When I originally heard about Fizzics, I assumed it utilized a nitro (or some other type of gas) system and would require a replacement nitro cartridge periodically. But that is not the way it works. The sound wave technology is designed to last, glass after glass, pour after pour. And even though it is battery operated, each tapping uses very little power. I learned from the manufacturer that a single set of batteries is good for about 300 Fizzics pours. In the future, they may introduce Fizzics with a rechargeable, plug in battery pack but for now, battery operation is the only option.
Another quality I like about Fizzics is the easy clean up. One fact I quickly learned is that the canister is intended to hold a full can, bottle, or small growler and that you place the full can bottle, or growler directly inside the canister. You do NOT pour the beer inside the canister. You actually set your full beer inside, then place the tube inside the beer. This is good, because it keeps the beer from becoming agitated from pouring it directly, reduces the chance for contamination, and makes for easy cleanup. The only thing to clean is the tube and, possibly, the removable drip tray if you accidentally spilled some beer. There is nothing more to do.
I Think I’ll Have Another
Draft beer is wonderful for countless reasons and with Fizzics, the greatness of draft is delivered directly to your lips any time, any place. It can be purchased online through Best Buy, Target, Brookstone, Amazon.com, and other retail outlets. I can’t wait to use my Fizzics Draft System on more brands/styles of beer and experience what this technology can offer on a broader basis. It’s a very good product overall and a great accessory for any craft beer lover’s home.
Would like to purchase a fizzics device but can’t tell the difference between waytap and FZ403. Looking for individual dispenser as opposed to the device using a growler. Please help
