Full Sail Brewing, the Hood River, Oregon brewery with a penchant for experimentation, has released a new beer that conjures up images of the tropics- in stark contrast to the cold winter season that presently engulfs Oregon and much of the country.
The new beer is IPApaya Papaya India Pale Ale and as its name indicates, it is a beer brewed with papaya along with locally grown hops for a refreshing IPA. IPApaya is the latest in Full Sail’s Pub Series and the beer’s creator, Full Sail Brewing Supervisor Greg Doss, says the combination of fruit, hops, and malt was carefully selected to balance the beer.
“We developed IPApaya to complement the tropical aromas found in Northwest hops with a subtle addition of papaya,” says Doss. “After testing several hop varietals for this IPA we chose to showcase Equinox – a hop well known for imparting unique fruity notes of melon, citrus, berry, and papaya. And since this beer was all about hops and fruit, we kept the recipe light and simple using only pale and wheat malts.”
The inclusion of pale and wheat malts with Equinox hops creates an ideal starting point for the addition of the tropical fruit known as papaya. The final result is a beer with tropical aromas of not just papaya, but also passion fruit and citrus, balanced by clean malt notes. Full Sail Brewmaster Jim Kelter says the beer is made to help Oregonians and others escape the doldrums of winter and imagine the warmer weather south of the border.
“Vibrant tropical flavors in this IPA brighten the dark days of winter,” says Kelter. “It’s a vacation in a bottle.”
IPApaya is the latest addition to the Full Sail Pub Series and it will be available for only a limited time. The 6.2 percent alcohol by volume, 58 IBU beer will be offered in six packs, as part of the Full Sail Trophy Case, and on draft. Look for it immediately, in places where Full Sail is presently sold, continuing through early April or until supplies run out.
