Major League Baseball legend Tony Gwynn was one of the greatest players of all time. His career batting average of .338 and his 8 National League Batting titles place him among the all- time best and his .394 batting average in 1994 is the high- water benchmark for this statistic and one that will likely never be topped.
San Diego’s AleSmith Brewing Co. paid tribute to the late Tony Gwynn a few years back with the 2014 release of San Diego Pale Ale .394. AleSmith followed this release with a special, limited edition imperial version of the same beer. This stronger brew, named Hall of Fame Imperial San Diego Pale Ale .394, weighed in at 9 percent alcohol by volume and was available only in the San Diego market.
Today, Alesmith Brewing announces the release of this special tribute beer on a nationwide basis. The 22 oz. bomber bottles come complete with Gwynn’s Hall of Fame signature on the outside and delicious, hop- infused imperial pale ale on the inside. Alesmith Brewing owner Peter Zien says the friendship between himself and the Gwynn family is strengthened by the nationwide release of this special brew.
“Tony’s spirit and the friendship we developed while working together has brought the Gwynn and Zien families incredibly close,” said Zien. “We hold the Tony Gwynn 5.5K run and walk annually with proceeds benefitting the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation. Hall of Fame Imperial San Diego Pale Ale .394 is just one more way for us to keep the memory of our dear friend alive.”
AleSmith Hall of Fame Imperial San Diego Pale Ale .394 will be available on draft at the AleSmith Brewing tap room. It will be distributed on a limited basis in 22 oz. bomber bottles throughout the 26 states and 8 countries where Alesmith beer is presently sold. It’s a great way to pay tribute to one of baseball’s greatest players and it is definitely a beer I want to try.
