Tröegs Independent Brewing, one of the many attractions in Hershey, Pennsylvania, is no stranger to critical acclaim. Its beers are consistently selected among the best in the Keystone state and now, the brewery has been recognized for something else: education. For the third year in a row, Tröegs Guided Production Tour has finished in first place in the 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards conducted by USA Today.
Taking the Top Spot
Being renowned for great beer is one thing, but Tröegs is also adamant about making sure its guests are fully aware of the brewing process and how the beer is brewed from the raw ingredients all the way to the finished product. Tröegs brewmaster and co- founding brother John Trogner says the tours have always been integral to the brewery experience.
“Back in the early days, my brother Chris and I used to give brewery tours every Saturday,” says John Trogner. “It’s amazing to see how our tour has evolved over the years. Our tour guides are super passionate about our beer and love explaining why we do things the way we do here at Tröegs.”
Tröegs Guided Production Tour starts off like most brewery tours, with a rundown of the brewing process. After that, the tour continues with education on how Tröegs packages its products and then ships the beer to nine states throughout its distribution network. The tour guides walk guests through the mill room, hop cooler, and brewhouse deck before moving on to the brewery’s fermentation cellars, packaging lines, and finally the “Scratch Lab” R&D brewhouse.
More than Beer
Touring Tröegs Brewing is a walk through history. The brewery has been going strong for more than 25 years and there is much to see and learn, much to inspire, and much to admire. But it’s more than just learning about the past. Another unique part of the tour is the Art of Tröegs Gallery, where the tour commences. For over 15 years, Tröegs has welcomed fans to take part in its annual Art of Tröegs contest. It’s a competition to see which fan can create the most interesting, original work of art inspired by Tröegs.
For 2023, the grand prize winner, Jess Geiger, blew away the competition with her hand-painted guitar, titled “The Harmony of Hops”. Jess drew parallels between beer and the popular musical instrument, showing how the two share qualities in common.
“Just like flavors in a beer and chords on a guitar, I wanted this piece to be harmonious and fun!” exclaimed Jess.
The Harmony of Hops guitar will be on display with about two dozen other Tröegs-inspired works of art, right after the 2023 Art of Tröegs Gallery Opening in late October, an exclusive, invitation- only event.
