Louisiana’s Urban South Brewery, the second largest craft brewery in the state and an important member of the New Orleans craft beer community, is expanding westward to Houston, Texas. The brewery was founded just three years ago, but its tremendous success led to the decision to spread its wings to the Lone Star State, with plans to open in January 2020.
To help get the new brewery up and running, Urban South has announced three key individuals to its Houston leadership team: Dave Ohmer, Justin Slanina, and Marin Slanina. These three have extensive food and beverage experience between them and Urban South Brewery founder Jacob Landry says their industry know- how will go far in helping to extend his brewery’s culture to Houston.
“Our team is what gives Urban South its heart and soul, bringing creativity and passion to everything we do. We can’t wait to build this same culture in Houston with Dave, Justin, and Marin,” says Landry. “They bring incredible breadth of experience, and we’re eager to have them leading our new operation. This is truly a Houston Dream Team, and we can’t wait to unleash their creativity!”
Here is a quick professional summary of Urban South’s newest Houston members:
Dave Ohmer: With 17 years of brewing experience, Ohmer will serve as Urban South Houston’s Head Brewer and General Manager. He previously brewed for Saw Works Brewing in Knoxville before moving to the Houston area to brew beer for Whole Foods Brewing and later, B52 Brewing in Conroe. Ohmer likes to experiment with different brewing processes and unique ingredients and he will be a key asset to the Urban South team.
Justin Slanina: Another man with brewing expertise, Slanina worked at B52 Brewing and before that, he was brewing beer for Ghost River Brewing in Memphis, Tennessee. Slanina will be responsible for formulating new recipes, maintaining the cellar, and managing the packaging process.
Marin Slanina: Another person with a B52 Brewing background, Slalina will run the front of house and will be responsible for marketing, promotions, and taproom management. In addition to her stint at B52 Brewing, she has also worked at major event arenas in Memphis, San Antonio, College Station, and Houston.
Urban South Brewery’s Houston location will feature an 11,000 square foot facility with a 10-barrel brewhouse, a canning line, a barrel/blending room, taproom, patio, and beer garden. The new brewery’s address will be at 1201 Oliver Street in Houston’s Sawyer Yards, just a little west of downtown.
