Urban South Brewery, the New Orleans, LA brewery known for its creative offerings, just opened a new branch in Houston, Texas a few months ago. Current events of varying sorts have forced the new Urban South to change its plans more than once and, in some instances, the changes have been for the better. A prime example is Urban South’s decision to participate in the “Black is Beautiful” initiative, a global beer collaboration launched by Weathered Souls Brewing in San Antonio. The goal of this effort is to create awareness of the countless injustices that many people of color face every day.
Dave Ohmer, General Manager at Urban South Brewery in Houston, says the collaboration’s mission is one that Urban South fully embraces.
“We are in awe of the leadership shown by Weathered Souls Brewing Company on this project and saw this as an amazing opportunity for our team to say something in unison with the other great people of the craft beer industry,” said Ohmer. “Together we are louder, and it is our duty to say something now and continue to push for change.”
Black is Beautiful is all about brewing beer for a cause. Weathered Souls Brewing invites participating breweries to use a base stout beer recipe provided to them, then add a few changes of their choosing, to make the beer unique. Participating breweries will market and sell the beer as usual, then donate all profits to a local non- profit or foundation that is committed to the cause of equality.
Urban South’s “Black is Beautiful” beer will be released in early July, with 100% of the proceeds from beer sales going to Black Lives Matter: Houston. This organization is dedicated to addressing issues that impact Houston’s Black community, improving the quality of life and fostering a sense of oneness with the greater Houston community as a whole.
