Pennsylvania’s Victory Brewing Company today announced the return of two perennial beer favorites: Sour Monkey and Moonglow Weizenbock. Sour Monkey, a variation on Victory’s Golden Monkey, first debuted in 2015 and fans anxiously await its release each year. Moonglow Weizenbock has been around since 2001 and has been a Victory fan favorite every year since.
Sour Monkey is an interesting beer, to say the least. It’s a tart brew fermented multiple times, using Westmalle yeast and Brettanomyces yeast. The beer utilizes whole flower hops, pilsner malt, and coriander. These ingredients, combined with the different yeast strains, leads to a funky, snappy beer containing 9.5 percent alcohol by volume.
Moonglow Weizenbock is another delicious treat and considering its longevity, it clearly has many great things going for it. As you might expect, the recipe emphasizes German ingredients, including German hops and malts, including over 50 percent malted wheat. The final result is an unfiltered wheat beer with complex flavors such as vanilla, nuts, fruit, clove, vanilla, and honey. This beer also packs a respectable punch, containing 8.7 percent alcohol by volume.
Victory Brewing founder/brewer Bill Covaleski knows that fans of these two highly distinctive beers will be thrilled to see them on store shelves.
“We’re happy to bring back these two popular beers. As each brand has a different base of loyal fans awaiting the return of these seasonals,” said Covaleski. “Whether it’s bringing back classics like Moonglow or creating new riffs on fan favorites by experimenting with Golden Monkey until we landed on Sour Monkey, our brewers build on traditional German brewing to create new and exiting flavors and that’s what tasting Victory has always been about.”
Sour Monkey will be sold in 750 ml bottles with an approximate retail price around $9. Moonglow Weizenbock will be offered in 12 oz. bottles for about $9.99 per four pack. These two beers will only be around for a short time, so grab them while you can.
