The Brewers Association just released its rankings of the Top 50 Craft Breweries and Top 50 Breweries overall, based on 2017 sales volume data.
On the craft brewery side, some significant changes took place in rankings over the past year. Two breweries, Anchor Brewing and Sixpoint, fell out of the Top 50 due to ownership changes. And, as is often the case, two of last year’s Top 50- Real Ale Brewing and BJ’s Brewery- dropped because they were overtaken by breweries that are growing more quickly.
With four breweries removed from the Top 50 Craft Brewery rankings, that means of course that there are four newcomers to the list. They are Wachusett at #49, Saint Arnold at #46, Three Floyds at #45, and Rhinegeist at #33. The high debut of Cincinnati- based Rhinegeist Brewing says quite a bit about the brewery’s popularity and commitment to quality.
Other significant movers on the positive side include Troegs Brewing, which moved up eight places from last year; Revolution Brewing which gained six positions; and Odell and 21st Amendment Brewing, each of which moved up five places. On the losing end, Long Trail Brewing fell seven notches and Green Flash declined by six. Also worth noting is the fact that, among the Top 50 Breweries overall, 40 of them are independent craft breweries.
