Fans of organic beer brewed by a certain Vermont brewery will no longer be able to find their favorite USDA certified product.
Wolaver’s Organic Ales, one of the longest running organic beer brand names, has ceased production. The Middlebury, Vermont based beer, a division of Otter Creek, will no longer brew the natural and fresh beers its fans have grown to love for more than twenty years. Alta Gracia Coffee Porter, one of Wolaver’s beers and a fan favorite, will be the last one shipped.
Logging into the Wolaver’s web site reveals this message to consumers:
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce today that we are retiring production of all Wolaver’s brews after an amazing 2 year run…As pioneers of the organic craft beer movement, we’ve learned a lot since 1997 and the successes of our brand can be attributed to the loyal, discerning fan base that have enjoyed our socially responsible beers through the years.”
Wolaver’s management goes on to say that rising costs of organic ingredients and the difficulty in obtaining them are the primary reasons for ceasing production of the brand. However, parent Otter Creek is still committed to social responsibility and plans to expand non- GMO verification of its entire product line.
Otter Creek says it will work with the Non-GMO Project and complete the first stage of non- GMO verification in early 2016.
