Which beers are the best in the world? Taste competitions are usually regional or national in scope, but one award that encompasses the entire globe is the World Beer Cup. The awards take place every two years and the 2022 award winners have been named. Like past years, the award ceremony took place at the conclusion of the Craft Brewers Conference, held this year in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals were awarded in 103 categories, an increase of two categories from the 2018 awards (2020 was cancelled, due to COVID). There were, of course, the common categories like American Wheat Beer, German- Style Pilsener, and Vienna- Style Lager. But there were also lesser- known categories of competition like Experimental Wood- Aged Beer and Mixed Culture Brett Beer.
American breweries still dominated the awards, winning 252 total medals. But there were plenty of other nations taking home a Gold, Silver, or Bronze. Canada ranked second in the world with 14 medals. Germany won 11 medals. And Colombia received its first ever World Beer Cup recognition, taking home a Gold Medal for Saison Con Miel, an entry in the Specialty Saison category.
Most impressive of all was the number of entries: 10,542 from 57 countries! The last World Beer Cup in 2018 had 8,234 entries. An increase this large proves that craft beer is making great inroads on an international scale.
