Swimming, gymnastics, track & field, volleyball…these sports and others like them are signature events at the summer Olympic games, but if a certain Florida- based beer establishment has its way, the Olympic games will soon include beer.
World of Beer, a combination restaurant/pub chain known for its vast selection of craft beer, wants to see a new event added to the Olympics; a new sport that started out as something focused more on charity and good fun, but that has morphed into a competitive affair. I am referring to the beer mile, an event that has exploded in popularity over the years and now claims more than 114,000 participants in 7,200 races worldwide, according to official data taken from beermile.com.
How serious is World of Beer in its mission to add the Beer Mile to the summer Olympics? Quite serious- in fact, there is now an online petition World of Beer wants you to sign, showing your support of the beer mile and its inclusion in the Games. And depending on the laws in the state in which you reside, World of Beer is ready to serve you a free beer or offer you $5 off a meal at one of its restaurants as a way of saying thank you for your support. The petition will remain active between July 21 and August 21, 2016.
Terry Haley, World of Beer Vice President of Marketing, says the time has come to advance the craft beer revolution on a global scale and what better way than through the largest competitive sporting event in the world.
“We’re very excited to get the support of our customers and biggest fans to petition for this awesome sport to be on the global stage,” said Haley. “World of Beer offers 500 plus beers from all around the world and we are passionate about global sports. What better way to bring our favorite things together than a petition to bring a beer sport to the games?”
Besides the beer mile petition, World of Beer has another important initiative this summer. The restaurant chain has partnered with Beerfit and is now an official sponsor of this organization’s fitness events. BeerFit is all about beer and exercise and its philosophy stresses the importance of staying in shape and rewarding one’s self with a cold beer. World of Beer will host workouts in its taverns, encouraging everyone to get in shape and finish off an exercise regimen with a beer of their choosing. BeerFit also sponsors beer miles across the nation, so the partnership with World of Beer is a natural fit.
The summer Olympic Games have expanded greatly from the early days and now include such sports as table tennis, dressage, sailing, and other forms of physical exertion. With its growing popularity and increasingly competitive nature, the beer mile is an obvious choice for Olympic expansion. Sign the petition today, and be sure to check back at www.worldofbeer.com/beermile to get updates on the petition’s status.
